Wer sind wir?

BlackBerry Development Group Berlin

An open letter to RIM

Java is over! This is at least what RIM claims now. This couldn't be more wrong. Java Me is over! But this has been true for a long time and we the developers told this to RIM at least since the 1st developer conference.
Java is far from dead. It's the most successful programming language (followed by C#).
Java was one of the key success factors of Android. The big Java community jumped on to the platform right from the beginning.
At devcon Amsterdam there speakers often asked the audience about their background and most of the time 90÷ raised their hands as Java developers. These are the developers RIM doesn’t want anymore! This is us!

The Berlin Blackberry group has always been small. But all of us are Java developers. Lately most of us did Android development simply because of lack of interest in Blackberry here in Germany. The group probably came too late. But for the future we see RIM doesn't want us anymore!

Even Microsoft did not send their developers away when they made the huge cut switching to Windows Phone. They still used their strong dot net / C# community.
RIM instead decided to make a break not only with their platform (which was right) but as well with their community. Actually they decided to copy Palm's approach for the platform: A great new OS with development of web technologies or Native. We all know how successful they were ;-)
Native is great for games but most developers wouldn't like to return to or even start with C++ in the year 2012! Apple made Objective C a success because it' Apple, that's nothing one can copy. RIM now attracts only Symbian developers with C++/Qt which doesn't sound much future for us.
“Web only” didn't work out for Palm, it didn't work out for Apple with the start of the iPhone so we don't see why it will make RIM a key player again.
HTML5 is the next big thing for sure but this will be a big thing for every platform so we see no need for a blackberry developer group for it.

The programming language makes a difference for developers. We have the tools, the libraries and a huge community. RIM could have modernized their Java platform, made such cool thing as Cascades with a Java API. They didn't!
RIM will have a stony way while modernizing their platform. That will be even harder without their developers. We still wish RIM good luck on their way but it will be without those developers that built that platform for years.

The Berlin Blackbery development group resigns with this mail.
